Champions League winners History

UEFA Champions League is a seasonal association football competition established in 1955. The UEFA Champions League is open to the league champions of all UEFA member associations as well as to the clubs finishing from second to fourth position in the strongest leagues. Before the 1992-93 seasons, the tournament was named the European Cup. Originally, only the champions of their respective national league and the defending champion of the competition were allowed to participate.

However, this was changed in 1997 to allow the runners-up of the stronger leagues to compete as well. The defending champion of the competition did not automatically qualify until the rules were changed in 2005 to allow title holders, Liverpool, to enter the competition. Real Madrid won the inaugural competition, beating Stade de Reims in the 1956 final. If a team wins the UEFA Champions League three times in a row, or five times overall, they are allowed to keep the European Champion Clubs' Cup and a new one is commissioned. As of 2011, five teams have earned this privilege; Real Madrid, Ajax, Bayern Munich, Milanand Liverpool. Real Madrid holds the record for the most victories, winning the competition nine times since its inception. They have also won the competition the most times in a row, winning it five times from 1956 to 1960.

Benfica and Juventus have been runners-up the most times, with both teams loosing the final five times. Spain has provided the most champions, with 13 wins from two clubs. Italy has produced 12 winners from three clubs and England has produced 11 winners from four clubs. English teams were banned from the competition for five years following the Heysel disaster in 1985. The current champions are Barcelona who beat Manchester United 3-1 in the 2011 final at the Wembley Stadium.

Champions League Trophy

UEFA Champions League simply known as Champions League and initially known as the European Champion Clubs’ Cup or European Cup. The European Cup is a trophy awarded annually by UEFA to the football club that wins the UEFA Champions League. The competition in its older format shared its name with the trophy, being also known as the European Cup, before being renamed for the 1992-93 season onwards.

The original European Cup trophy was donated by L'Équipe, a French sports newspaper. This trophy was awarded permanently to Real Madrid in March 1967. At the time, they were the reigning champions, and had won six titles altogether, including the first five competitions from 1956 to 1960. Celtic thus became the first club to win the cup in its current design in 1967.

Since 2009, Champions League winners have not kept the real trophy, which remains in UEFA's keeping always. A full-size replica trophy, the Champions League winner’s trophy, is awarded to the winning club with their name engraved on it. Winning clubs are also permitted to make replicas of their own; however, they must be clearly marked as such and can be a maximum of 80 percent the size of the actual trophy.

The replacement trophy, with a somewhat different design from the original, was commissioned by UEFA. At a cost of 10,000 Swiss francs, it was silver, 74 cm high, weighing 8 kg. The trophy bears the title "COUPE DES CLUBS CHAMPIONS EUROPEENS”. Subsequent replacement trophies have replicated this design. In Spanish, it is nicknamed La Orejona ("big-ears") because of the shape of the handles and therefore, Luis Omar Tapia, a long-time ESPN UCL announcer made the name "la Orejona" popular on the American continents.

A club, whose Champions League title win was not a fifth overall or third consecutive, previously kept the real trophy for ten months after their victory and received a scaled-down replica to keep permanently. Since 2009, the real trophy remains with UEFA always, but the winning club now receives a full-sized replica with their name engraved on it. The trophy that was awarded at the 2010 UEFA Champions League Final is the sixth, and has been in use since 2006, after Liverpool won their fifth European Cup in 2005.

The current seasons 2011-12, UEFA Champions League is the 57th season of the European Cup and the 20th season in its current Champions League. Barcelona is the defending champions. The winner earns a berth at the 2012 FIFA Club World Cup. Champions League Tickets are available at FootballTicketExchangeOnline.com for affordable price. Champions League - History

UEFA Champions League simply known as Champions League and initially known as the European Champion Clubs' Cup or European Cup. UEFA Champions League is the top level of European football teams. UEFA Champions League is an annual international club football competition planned by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) since 1955 for the top football clubs in Europe. It is the most impressive club competition in European football. The final of the competition is the most watched annual sporting event worldwide, drawing over 145 million television viewers.

The European Cup took first place during the 1955-56 seasons. The first European Cup match took place on 4 September 1955, which ended in a 3-3 draw among Sporting CP and Partizan. The first goal in European Cup history was scored byJoao Baptista Martins of Sporting CP. The inaugural final took place at the Parc des Princes between Stade Reims and Real Madrid. The Spanish squad came back from behind to win 4-3 thanks to two goals from Alfredo Di Stefano and Marquitos each, as well as a brace from Hector Rial.

Real Madrid successfully defended the trophy next season in their home stadium, the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, against Fiorentina. After a scoreless first half, Real Madrid scored twice in six minutes to defeat the Italians. In 1958, AC Milan failed to capitalize after going ahead on the scoreline twice, only for Real Madrid to equalize. The final held in Heysel Stadium went to extra time when Francisco Gento scored the game-winning goal to allow Real Madrid to retain the title for the third, consecutive season. In a rematch of the first final, Real Madrid faced Stade Reims at the Neckarstadion for the 1958-59 seasons final easily winning 2-0. West German side Eintracht Frankfurt became the first non-Latin team to reach the European Cup final. The 1959-60 season finales still holds the record for the most goals scored, but the record is overshadowed by the 7-3 thrashing Eintracht Frankfurt received in Hampden Park, courtesy of four goals by Ferenc Puskas and a hat-trick by Di Stefano. This was Real Madrid's fifth, consecutive title, a record that stills stands today.

The Merengues reign ended in the 1960-61 season when bitter rivals Barcelona dethroned them in the quarterfinals. However, Barcelona themselves would be defeated in the final by Portuguese outfit Benfica 3-2 at Wankdorf Stadium. Reinforced by Eusebio, Benfica defeated Real Madrid 5-3 at the Olympic Stadium and kept the title for a second, consecutive season. Benfica wanted to repeat Real Madrid's successful run of the 1950s after reaching the showpiece event of the 1962-63 European Cup; but a brace from Brazilian-Italian Jose Altafini at the Wembley Stadium gave the spoils to AC Milan, making the trophy leave the Iberian Peninsula for the first time ever. Internazionale beat an aging-Real Madrid 3-1 in the Ernst-Happel-Stadion to win the 1963-64 season and replicate their local-rival's success. The title stayed in Milan for the third year in a row after Internazionale beat Benfica 1-0 at their home ground, the San Siro.

The current seasons 2011-12, UEFA Champions League is the 57th season of the European Cup and the 20th season in its current Champions League. Barcelona is the defending champions.
